Taiwanese Singer Kui Faces Trial in Fatal Hit-and-Run Case

Taipei, Taiwan - Singer Kui (邱軍) is set to stand trial following the tragic death of a taxi driver in a hit-and-run collision in Keelung last December. Local prosecutors filed an indictment on Monday, detailing the events of the incident.

The accident occurred on Xinyi Road in Keelung at approximately 4:16 a.m. on December 27th. The taxi driver, surnamed Lee (李), and a man named Chen (陳), were standing at the roadside when they were struck by a vehicle.

Investigations revealed that the driver of the vehicle was the 26-year-old singer, Kui (邱軍). Prosecutors have stated that Kui was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident and failed to stop and offer assistance. A bystander chased after the car as it ran a red light.

According to the indictment, Kui had been drinking from midnight to 4 a.m. before driving to a friend's residence in Keelung. He did not report the incident to the authorities, contact emergency services, or attempt to provide any first aid.

Chen sustained contusions, while Lee underwent emergency surgeries but tragically passed away in the hospital on January 3rd. Prosecutors summoned Kui for questioning on January 7th and obtained court approval to detain the singer.

Kui has been held incommunicado since then, and the court granted a prosecution motion to extend the detention in late February.

Due to the severity of the charges and the loss of life, Kui's trial will be presided over by a panel consisting of six citizen judges and three professional judges, reflecting Taiwan's justice system.

Since January 1, 2023, Taiwan has incorporated citizen judges in trials where defendants are accused of intentionally committing crimes that result in fatalities, demonstrating a commitment to community involvement in the legal process.
