Smoke Signals & Smooth Skies: Taoyuan Airport Operations Uninterrupted Despite Factory Fire

A Factory Blaze Sends Smoke Drifting, But Flight Schedules Remain Unchanged in Taiwan

Taipei, Taiwan - A fire that broke out at a factory in Taoyuan's Luzhu District on Sunday morning sent plumes of thick smoke across the sky, drawing concern in the surrounding areas. However, despite the visual impact, Taoyuan International Airport confirmed that flight operations remained unaffected.

The Taoyuan International Airport Corp. reported that while smoke was visible from within the terminal, takeoffs and landings proceeded as scheduled, assuring passengers of minimal disruption.

“Passengers do not need to worry," the airport stated in an official announcement.

The Taoyuan Fire Department responded swiftly to the incident, receiving the initial report of the blaze at a single-story industrial structure at 9:13 a.m. Fire trucks and ambulances were immediately deployed to the scene.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the factory housed approximately 100 metric tons of palm oil and other vegetable oils, which contributed to the dense smoke.

Authorities confirmed that there were no reported injuries or individuals trapped within the structure. The cause of the fire and the extent of the property damage are currently under investigation.

The Taoyuan Department of Environmental Protection issued an advisory via Facebook, warning residents in downwind areas of potential smoke odors. Residents were advised to stay indoors, close windows and doors, and minimize outdoor activities. Those needing to venture outside were encouraged to wear masks, with vulnerable individuals urged to take extra precautions to safeguard their health.

Potentially affected areas identified by the Department include Puxin, Zhuwei and Kuolin wards in Dayuan District, as well as Kengkou Ward in Luzhu District.
