Smoke Signals Over Taoyuan: Airport Operations Uninterrupted Despite Factory Fire
A factory fire near Taoyuan International Airport filled the sky with smoke, but flights continued as scheduled, ensuring smooth travel for passengers.
Taipei, Taiwan - May 4 - A fire erupted at a factory in Taoyuan's Luzhu District on Sunday morning, causing a significant plume of smoke to drift towards Taoyuan International Airport. Despite the visible smoke, local authorities confirmed that flight operations were unaffected and continued without disruption.
The Taoyuan International Airport Corp. reported that the smoke was clearly visible from inside the airport terminals. However, both takeoffs and landings proceeded according to the regular schedule, reassuring passengers. "Passengers do not need to worry," the airport stated.
The Taoyuan Fire Department responded to the blaze, receiving the initial report at 9:13 a.m. The fire involved a single-story industrial structure. Fire trucks and ambulances were immediately dispatched to the scene to contain the fire. The factory contained approximately 100 metric tons of palm oil and other vegetable oils, which likely contributed to the smoke's density.
Fortunately, the Fire Department reported that there were no injuries or individuals trapped at the site. The cause of the fire and the extent of the property damage are currently under investigation.
The Taoyuan Department of Environmental Protection issued a public advisory on Facebook, warning residents in downwind areas of potential smoke odors. They recommended that people "try to stay indoors, close doors and windows, and minimize going outside." They also advised wearing masks if outdoor activity was unavoidable. The department urged vulnerable individuals to take additional precautions to minimize health risks.
Potentially affected areas include Puxin, Zhuwei, and Kuolin wards in Dayuan District, and Kengkou Ward in Luzhu District.
