Tragedy at the Yilan Green Expo: Elderly Man Dies After Small Train Incident

A somber atmosphere now hangs over the Yilan Green Expo, as a tragic accident involving a small tourist train has led to the temporary suspension of all train services. The incident, which occurred this afternoon, resulted in the death of a 78-year-old man and serious injuries to his wife.

The accident, believed to be caused by a brake failure, involved an elderly couple from New Taipei City. The 78-year-old man, later identified as Mr. You, sustained critical injuries and went into cardiac arrest at the scene. Despite immediate medical attention at the Su-ao Veterans Hospital, he could not be saved. His 78-year-old wife, Mrs. Lu, suffered a fractured hand and is receiving treatment at Luodong Pohai Hospital.

The Yilan County Government has responded quickly to the crisis. Mr. Li Hsin-tai, Director of the County's Department of Agriculture, stated that all two tourist trains have been temporarily suspended for thorough inspection and safety checks. The electric trains, which have two or three carriages each, can accommodate approximately 40 passengers. They typically operate from 9 a.m. daily, offering guided tours and a speed of around 20-30 kilometers per hour.
