China Announces Arrests of Alleged Filipino Spies
Beijing Accuses Manila of Espionage Network Targeting Military Deployments.

China has announced the dismantling of what it describes as an intelligence network established by the Philippine espionage agency, leading to the arrest of three alleged Filipino spies. This announcement highlights escalating tensions and accusations of espionage between the two nations.
According to state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV), authorities identified one of the suspects as a Philippine national residing and working in China for an extended period. This individual is alleged to have been conducting espionage activities near military facilities.
The CCTV report featured a video depicting the arrest and what appeared to be a recorded confession. The report stated that the individual was recruited by Philippine intelligence to exploit their long-term presence in China for espionage, gathering sensitive information, particularly concerning military deployments.
The suspect reportedly conducted close surveillance and photography near military installations. The three individuals were recruited by the same Philippine agent since 2021 and were reportedly compensated regularly for their work. Their tasks also included assisting the Philippine spy agency in recruiting and developing personnel, as well as expanding its intelligence network within China.
CCTV further reported that the individuals provided "a large amount of military-related and confidential video materials" to Philippine agents, causing "serious harm to China’s national security and interests." A Chinese national security officer was quoted in the report.
In response to the accusations, Philippine National Security Council spokesman Jonathan Malaya stated that the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs is currently verifying the reports and the involvement of any Philippine nationals. He added that they would offer no further comment until the reports are confirmed.
When asked about the charges, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they would handle the cases in accordance with the law while safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of the individuals involved. Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Guo Jiakun (郭嘉昆) also accused Manila of fabricating several alleged Chinese espionage cases. Guo urged the Philippines to cease what he termed as unsubstantiated accusations.
