Taiwan's Cinematic Renaissance Takes London: BFI to Showcase 15 New Cinema Masterpieces

Taipei, March 30 – Prepare to be transported to the vibrant heart of Taiwanese cinema! In a landmark collaboration, Taiwan's Ministry of Culture (MOC) and the prestigious British Film Institute (BFI) are presenting "Myriad Voices: Reframing Taiwan New Cinema," a month-long event dedicated to the artistry and innovation of the Taiwan New Cinema movement.

Running at BFI Southbank in London from March 31 to April 30, the event features 15 classic films across 30 screenings. Audiences will have the opportunity to experience the cinematic brilliance of renowned directors such as Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢), Edward Yang (楊德昌), Wang Toon (王童), Wan Jen (萬仁), Chang Yi (張毅), Chen Kun-hou (陳坤厚), and Huang Yu-shan (黃玉珊), according to a statement released by the MOC.

Adding to the excitement, Chen and Huang will be present at select screenings, offering valuable insights and engaging in discussions about the films and the movement as a whole.

This event follows the successful BFI season dedicated to the works of Edward Yang in February, as noted by curator Hyun Jin Cho, quoted by the MOC.

According to Cho, the Taiwan New Cinema movement was characterized by a spirit of creativity, playfulness, and humility. This season aims to provide a comprehensive view of this remarkable film movement and highlight the contributions of lesser-known but essential figures who helped shape this unique cinematic expression.

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the U.K. has expressed that this collaboration with the BFI signifies a significant achievement, reflecting their dedication to promoting cultural exchange and increasing appreciation for Taiwanese cinema.

The MOC statement also emphasized the crucial support provided by the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, which licensed the film titles and played a key role in the curation of the event.

The MOC hopes that the distinct narratives presented in these films will resonate deeply with audiences across the U.K.

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the U.K. hopes that the collaboration with the BFI will enhance the visibility of Taiwanese films in the U.K. and provide the British public with a deeper understanding of Taiwanese cinema.
