Tainan's School District Shake-Up: Navigating Changes After Free Choice Elimination

The city of Tainan is implementing a significant change for the upcoming school year: the complete elimination of open enrollment, returning to a zoned school system. This shift, currently underway during the elementary and junior high school admission process, has the education community in a state of anticipation, eager to understand the implications.

The ultimate impact won't be fully understood until registration is complete, but the demand for prestigious schools remains high. However, some schools, particularly those with limited catchment areas, are facing increased challenges in attracting students and are advocating for adjustments to promote equity.

School principals suggest that smaller, rural schools should continue to have a broader catchment area to foster the development of their unique characteristics.

Zheng Xinhui stated that shared school districts, which extend beyond a school's primary zone, have evolved due to environmental changes. Following the end of free enrollment, district boundaries require adjustment. Planning and discussions are underway, encouraging schools to collaborate on district divisions. This may involve two or three schools forming a larger joint district or expanding existing shared districts. Adjustments to basic school districts are also open for discussion, provided the principle of local enrollment is maintained.
