New National Museum to Showcase Contemporary Taiwanese Art

The establishment of a national museum dedicated to contemporary Taiwanese art is underway, with a preparatory office scheduled to commence operations soon. This initiative responds to long-standing requests from artists and their families for a dedicated space to research, archive, and display the nation's artistic heritage.

Support for the project has been demonstrated through donations of artworks and collaborative statements, underlining the significance of this endeavor. The museum will be situated within a building of the Tainan Art Museum, as agreed with local authorities.

This will be the second national museum of fine arts in the nation, complementing the existing National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts located in Taichung.

The museum will focus its permanent exhibition on contemporary Taiwanese artwork produced between 1895 and 1960, a decision informed by consultations with descendants of artists and art scholars. This new institution is also expected to alleviate the existing pressures on exhibition and storage space at the Taichung museum, which has been in operation since 1988.

While a specific opening date has not been announced, the Tainan Art Museum is planning exhibitions for this year.
