Man Charged with Attempted Murder After Firing Gun at Children and Instructors at Taiwan Swimming School

A man in Taiwan has been indicted on charges of attempted murder following a disturbing incident at a swimming school. The individual, identified as Chen, allegedly consumed a significant amount of illicit substances before entering the facility and threatening instructors and young children with a firearm.

The incident occurred on Taiwan's National Day. According to reports, Chen consumed approximately 20 packets of what is described as "poisoned coffee" before proceeding to a swimming school in the Xitun District. He then entered the premises, reportedly carrying a loaded firearm. In a shocking turn of events, Chen jumped into the swimming pool and aimed the weapon at a swimming instructor and two children, pulling the trigger. Fortunately, the firearm failed to discharge, preventing any immediate harm.

Undeterred, Chen continued to menace the instructor and the children by repeatedly cocking the slide of the handgun and pointing it at them. Following this, he reportedly smashed the car window of a mother and her daughter in the swimming school's parking lot, causing them considerable distress.

Authorities were alerted and quickly apprehended Chen at the scene. During the arrest, law enforcement officers seized a substantial quantity of illicit substances, including numerous packets of "poisoned coffee" with distinct packaging, as well as a modified handgun, ammunition, and empty shell casings. Further searches at Chen's residence uncovered additional illicit substances and ammunition.

During questioning, Chen claimed that he had consumed 20 packets of the illicit substance prior to the incident and had no awareness or control over his actions. He admitted to submerging the firearm in water but denied any intent to kill or threaten.

Prosecutors have concluded their investigation and have formally charged Chen with attempted murder of individuals under the age of seven, as well as charges related to firearms and illicit substances (which are being handled in a separate case). The indictment marks a significant step in the legal proceedings against him.
