Brother Sentenced to 10 Years Imprisonment and 24 Strokes of the Cane for 11 Years of Abuse Against His Sister in Singapore

A 31-year-old man in Singapore has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and 24 strokes of the cane for sexually abusing his younger sister over an 11-year period. The abuse began in 2007 when the man was 13 years old and his sister was only 7. The revelation of these acts has sent shockwaves through the community.

Court documents indicate that the abuse continued until 2018, with incidents occurring in their home and in the back of a car. The victim, now 25 years old, only disclosed the abuse to her partner and sister in March 2023, leading to the perpetrator's arrest on April 18, 2023.

Prosecutors explained that the victim was too young to comprehend the nature of the abuse when it first began. As she grew older, she remained silent, wanting to avoid criticism and protect her family. The abuse persisted, with the then 23-year-old brother forcing sexual acts upon his 17-year-old sister between 2017 and 2018.

The defendant pleaded guilty to three charges of sexual assault and incest, with four other charges, including attempted sexual assault, taken into consideration. The judge highlighted how the perpetrator exploited his sister's trust in him as an older brother, leaving the victim with lifelong trauma.

The defense lawyer, Tanaya Kinjavdekar, appealed for leniency, stating that the family was devastated by the revelations and that the man expressed deep remorse. His fiancée has pledged her support, and the defense requested a more lenient sentence.

Ultimately, the judge imposed a sentence of 10 years imprisonment and 24 strokes of the cane. The man's request to delay his imprisonment by two months was denied, but he was granted a two-week extension to report for his sentence on December 15. His bail was set at S$100,000.
