Massive Fire Engulfs Taiwan Typhoon Debris Site, Threatening Week-Long Blaze
A significant fire broke out late at night at a temporary storage site for typhoon debris in Taiwan, with officials warning it could take up to a week to extinguish.
A large fire erupted on the evening of [Date] at a temporary storage facility for typhoon debris in Houbi District, Tainan, Taiwan. The site, filled with accumulated garbage and branches, became engulfed in flames, illuminating the night sky and radiating intense heat detectable from 50 meters away. Based on past experiences, extinguishing this fire is expected to take approximately one week.
The incident immediately drew significant attention, with Tainan City Environmental Protection Bureau Director Xu Renzhe, Legislator Lai Huiyuan, and Houbi District Chief Li Zhibin rushing to the scene to assess the situation. Director Xu Renzhe noted that the surrounding areas, primarily consisting of canals, farmland, and forests, have temporarily prevented the fire from spreading further. Legislator Lai Huiyuan had previously sought central government subsidies to assist with the cleanup of debris from the typhoon, but funding remains insufficient. The Environmental Protection Bureau has not yet received approval for additional subsidies, which has hindered the progress of clearing the Houbi temporary site.
Notably, the Wushulin temporary site, originally scheduled to be returned to the Navy's Sea Eagle Brigade by May of next year, became a focal point for the fire due to the accumulation of waste wood and garbage that had not been cleared in a timely manner. Preliminary investigations suggest that the piles of waste wood generated biogas due to temperature fluctuations, leading to spontaneous combustion and igniting the blaze. The flames rapidly spread to the mountains of garbage and wood, exacerbating the disaster.
The fire department deployed a large number of fire trucks and water tankers to support the operation. However, due to insufficient water sources within the site, water had to be transported from external sources, making the situation challenging. The fire has spread across multiple storage areas, and the sound of explosions has been reported, creating a distressing scene. Efforts to create firebreaks using excavators have proven largely ineffective against the intensity of the fire, presenting significant obstacles to firefighting efforts.
