Taiwan's Pork Prices Spike Post-Slaughterhouse Reopening Amidst High Demand
Market Dynamics Drive Up Costs as Wholesalers and Frozen Food Sector Replenish Stocks
Following the lifting of a 15-day ban on pig transportation and slaughter, pork prices in Miaoli County, Taiwan, have seen a notable increase over two consecutive days. This surge is attributed to a strong demand from wholesalers and frozen food companies that are actively seeking to replenish their inventories.
Local officials have indicated that the current price hike is a direct consequence of supply not meeting the robust demand. Efforts are underway in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture to increase the number of pigs available for auction. Projections suggest that approximately 1,040 pigs will be offered for sale on Monday.
The Miaoli Meat Market, recognized as the largest auction market for black-haired pigs in Taiwan, reported that the average auction price reached NT$125 (US$4) per kilogram on Friday. This figure represents the highest price observed across Taiwan. The market typically processes a mix of about 60% black-haired pigs and 40% white-haired pigs.
By Saturday, 628 pigs were auctioned, and the average price saw a further rise to NT$130 per kilogram, although the available supply still fell short of the market's demand.
The Miaoli County Agriculture Department clarified that the price increase is not a result of market manipulation but rather a reflection of natural market forces. The African swine fever outbreak necessitated a halt in pig movement and slaughter for over two weeks. During this period, demand accumulated as frozen food processors and butcher shops worked to secure supplies, leading to higher prices once auctions recommenced.
To ensure price stability and support both consumers and vendors, the Miaoli Meat Market is collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture to expand the approved auction volumes. Authorities anticipate that prices will gradually stabilize, leading to reduced procurement costs and ensuring that consumers can purchase pork at more reasonable rates.
The department has reassured the public, stating that central authorities and the market are actively managing supply and expect prices to stabilize starting next week. Consumers are also encouraged to continue their support for domestically produced pork.
Market representatives noted that prior to the outbreak, the average price hovered around NT$100 per kilogram. The current situation is further exacerbated by wholesalers actively restocking, which is contributing to the tighter supply.
