China Temporarily Lifts Export Ban on Key Tech Metals to the US

China has announced a temporary suspension of its export ban on gallium, germanium, and antimony, metals essential for modern technological applications, including semiconductors. The Ministry of Commerce in Beijing made this announcement on Sunday.

These restrictions, initially implemented in December 2024, prohibited the export of "dual-use" goods – materials that possess both civilian and military applications. The suspension is set to remain in effect until November 27, 2026, according to a statement from the ministry.

This development follows a meeting between leaders Xi Jinping and Donald Trump on October 30 in South Korea, where they reportedly agreed to ease some of the retaliatory measures introduced during a period of escalating trade tensions.

The trade dispute had previously led to significant tariffs on goods exchanged between the two largest global economies, disrupting international trade and supply chains.

During the trade conflict, China had strategically utilized its significant control over critical minerals, which are fundamental to a wide range of products, from consumer electronics like smartphones to sophisticated military technology.
