Typhoon Feng凰 Nears Taiwan: Sea Alert Expected Tomorrow Afternoon as Heavy Rains Loom

Forecasters anticipate Typhoon Feng凰 has reached its peak intensity and is unlikely to strengthen further, with potential for significant rainfall across northern and eastern Taiwan.

As of this evening, Typhoon Feng凰 remains classified as a medium typhoon. It is projected to have reached its peak intensity and is expected to weaken after making landfall in Luzon tonight. The combined effects of the northeasterly monsoon and the typhoon are anticipated to bring heavy rainfall, potentially exceeding the "豪雨" (heavy rain) level, to northern and eastern Taiwan on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) is preparing to issue a sea typhoon warning by tomorrow afternoon to evening, with a land warning expected the day after.

According to CWA forecaster Chang Cheng-chuan, as of 2 PM today, Typhoon Feng凰 was located 820 kilometers southeast of Eluanbi, maintaining its position at the upper limit of the medium typhoon category. It is not expected to intensify further tonight before passing through Luzon. On Tuesday, the typhoon will shift northward, approaching Taiwan. The specific areas most affected by heavy rainfall will vary between Tuesday and Thursday, depending on the typhoon's trajectory.

Regarding the potential impact of the typhoon's circulation, Chang indicated that western Taiwan could also experience its effects. The CWA plans to issue a sea typhoon warning between tomorrow afternoon and evening, followed by a land warning on the morning of the day after.

Chang further explained that Typhoon Feng凰 has a chance of making landfall in Luzon tonight. Post-landfall, terrain-induced weakening is expected, limiting its chances of strengthening. It is projected to enter the South China Sea still as a medium typhoon. By Tuesday, it will turn north, and by Wednesday and Thursday, it is expected to enter the Taiwan Strait and pass by Taiwan. During its northward movement, strong vertical wind shear is anticipated, creating an environment unfavorable for maintaining its intensity. It may have weakened to a light typhoon by the time it passes Taiwan.
