Taiwan Railways Upgrades New Taroko Express Seats for Enhanced Passenger Comfort

Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) is embarking on a significant upgrade to the seating on its EMU3000 series "New Taroko Express" trains, a move designed to address persistent passenger feedback regarding comfort. For some time, travelers have reported discomfort and back pain during extended journeys on these modern trains. Additionally, the placement of charging ports beneath the seats has been a point of contention, requiring passengers to bend or kneel to access them.

To rectify these issues, TRA plans to commence a comprehensive seating renovation project by the end of November. The first train to feature the upgraded "wrapped backrest 2.0" seats is expected to be completed and back in service by the end of December. These new seats will incorporate charging ports directly into the armrests, offering a much more convenient solution for passengers needing to power their devices.

The entire fleet of 50 EMU3000 series trains, comprising a total of 600 carriages, is slated for this refurbishment by the end of 2024. This extensive upgrade represents a substantial investment of NT$110 million.

The EMU3000 series trains, often lauded for their aesthetic design, initially adopted German-imported seating materials that meet European fire safety standards. While these materials ensure high fire resistance, their inherent firmness has been the source of passenger complaints about seating comfort during long trips.
