New Barrier Lake Forms on Taiwan's Matai'an Creek, Threatening Overflow

Taipei, Taiwan – Local authorities in Hualien County have announced the formation of a new barrier lake on Matai'an Creek, with projections indicating a potential overflow within the next 24 hours. The announcement was made on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hualien County Government stated that this newly formed lake has an estimated water capacity of approximately 600,000 tons. This is significantly smaller than the main barrier lake located about a kilometer upstream on Matai'an Creek, which experienced an overflow last month resulting in a tragic loss of life.

In response to this developing situation, and as a precautionary measure, the county government has issued an immediate directive for all machinery and personnel to vacate the river area. This action is intended to ensure the safety of those working in or near the creek.

Furthermore, a temporary access road situated near the Matai'an Creek Bridge on Provincial Highway No. 9 may be closed if deemed necessary. The county government is advising drivers to proactively identify and plan alternative routes to avoid potential disruptions.
