Emergency Efforts Underway to Stabilize Taroko Gorge Landslide Lake in Taiwan

In Taiwan's Taroko Gorge, the landslide-induced lake at Swallow's Entrance (燕子口) is experiencing continuous seepage. Fortunately, rainfall has been minimal, keeping the water level approximately 4.8 meters below the dam's crest. The Forestry Bureau's Hualien Branch reports that the site is challenging due to frequent rockfalls, creating hazardous working conditions. There is a growing concern about the increasing seepage from the base of the dam. Engineers are currently working to excavate the dam body, with about 10 meters remaining to be lowered, to mitigate risks.

The central forward command center's chief coordinator, Ji Lian-cheng (季連成), stated that Taroko received 33 millimeters of rain yesterday and is expected to receive 50 to 80 millimeters today. The water level is currently stable and not overflowing. Excavation efforts are ongoing with the aim of facilitating water outflow. This process is estimated to take between three to seven days. While there is no immediate danger, a red alert remains in effect for public safety.
