Navigating Taiwan on a Budget: Updated Taiwan Pass Prices
New Taiwan Pass prices reflect increased train fares, but still offer great value for exploring the island.
Taipei, June 13 – Travelers planning to explore Taiwan should take note: prices for several versions of the Taiwan Pass, designed to streamline travel across the island, will increase starting June 23. This adjustment aligns with the first Taiwan Railway fare hikes since 1995, as announced by the Tourism Administration.
The Taiwan Pass offers packages covering train travel, regional public transportation, and access to various attractions. Plans that include rides on Taiwan Railway Corp. trains will see price increases ranging from 18.5% to 31.5%, according to the agency.
The Taiwan Railway fare is seeing an average increase of 26.8%. As a result, the state-owned company's three- and five-day TR-Pass options will cost 28-33% more.
Specifically, the "Taiwan Railway EasyGo" option, which includes a three-day TR-Pass, will cost NT$2,500 (US$84.41), a 31.5% increase of NT$600. A discounted price of NT$1,500 will be available for children under 12.
In addition to the TR-Pass, the EasyGo option provides choices such as a car rental or Uber voucher, an Airport MRT round-trip ticket, a 48-hour pass for public transportation in Greater Taipei and Keelung or in Kaohsiung, or for the Taichung Metro.
Travelers can also opt for a bus round-trip to popular destinations like Sun Moon Lake or Alishan Forest Railway train rides.
The "Taiwan Railway Attractions" version will be priced at NT$3,000, a 25% increase of NT$600. This pass will continue to offer a flat rate for all ages. It includes a three-day TR-Pass, a 48-hour metro pass or Airport MRT round-trip ticket, a tourist bus round-trip to destinations such as Kenting, and access to attractions like the National Palace Museum and Taipei Zoo.
New prices for the "Taiwan Railway Classic" version will be NT$3,200 for adults (a 18.5% increase of NT$500) and NT$1,900 for children under 12 (a 5.6% increase). This plan encompasses a five-day TR-Pass, a 48-hour pass or Airport MRT round-trip ticket, and a tourist bus round-trip or a train ride to Alishan.
Taiwan Passes purchased before June 23 will remain valid for one year from the purchase date. All passes provide flexible travel within a seven-day period.
It's worth noting that the "High-Speed Rail Attractions" and "High-Speed Rail Classic" Taiwan Pass options, which both include a three-day pass for Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. services and are exclusively for foreign passport holders, will not be subject to the price increase.
Launched on January 1, 2024, the Taiwan Pass is sold through contracted travel sites such as Klook and Lion Travel.
