American Couple's Taiwan Dream Turns into a Nightmare: Drug Smuggling and Prison

In a case that highlights the severe consequences of drug trafficking, an American couple's dream of visiting Taiwan has transformed into a legal battle. Last December, the couple, identified as Mr. Red (translated) and Ms. Lee, were apprehended at Taiwan's Taoyuan International Airport with approximately 19 kilograms of cannabis concealed in their luggage. The estimated value of the seized drugs exceeds 28 million New Taiwan Dollars.

According to law enforcement investigations, the couple was allegedly offered a payment of $15,000 USD to transport the drugs. Their travel, including flights and accommodation, was reportedly arranged and paid for via Apple Pay. Upon arrival at the Taoyuan Airport from San Francisco International Airport, customs and airport security personnel discovered anomalies in their four checked suitcases. Upon inspection, the authorities found packages containing the illicit substance.

Following the discovery, the couple was detained and handed over to the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office. They confessed to the crime, and the prosecution has charged them with transporting a Level 2 controlled substance under the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act. The couple is currently in custody and faces a minimum prison sentence of ten years. The planned wedding has been put on hold.
