Taiwan Black Bear Rescued After Suffering Injury in Illegal Trap

A wild Formosan black bear was rescued after being found caught in a trap near Wuling Farm in Taiwan. The rescue operation involved a coordinated effort between the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency (FNCA) Taichung Division, the Agricultural Department's Biodiversity Research Institute, and the Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters.

On the afternoon of November 17th, personnel from the FNCA's Lishan Work Station discovered the distressed bear. The location of the trap was within the Shei-Pa National Park. Due to the National Park's lack of experience in black bear rescue, the FNCA Taichung Division took the lead, mobilizing a team of 27 people, including veterinarians from the Biodiversity Research Institute. The bear was sedated and transported overnight to the Wildlife Emergency Station for treatment.

The rescued bear, a 63-kilogram adult male, was found to be underweight, dehydrated, and suffering from inflammation, anemia, and malnutrition. The bear's left front paw required partial amputation. The bear is now under medical care and observation at the wildlife emergency station.

The Shei-Pa National Park Headquarters has reported that several sightings of black bears have been reported by hikers near the Qika Lodge. The incident underscores the ongoing threat of illegal hunting. The National Park authorities are increasing patrols to combat illegal hunting activities within the park.
