Taiwan Bolsters Mountain Safety: Enhanced Trails and Communication for Hikers

TAIPEI, Taiwan – The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency in Taiwan has announced significant enhancements to improve the safety of hikers and climbers in the nation's mountainous regions.

The recent upgrades include the installation of 1,381 mobile signal coverage signs and 3,420 newly designed trail signs along popular hiking routes. This initiative aims to reduce mountain accidents, particularly those related to disorientation or physical trauma, following the easing of climbing restrictions.

In partnership with other governmental departments and private telecom providers, the agency has established more mobile reception points in mountainous areas. This development allows hikers to more effectively report their locations and request assistance during emergencies.

The redesigned trail signs provide clearer and more comprehensive information. Each sign displays the trail name, key landmarks, distance from the trailhead, and GPS coordinates. These signs are strategically placed at approximately 100-meter intervals and will undergo annual professional maintenance.

Furthermore, all the new data, including signal maps and sign locations, has been uploaded to the government’s open data platform and integrated into mobile applications and mapping services, improving accessibility for all hikers.
