Taiwan's Tech Titans: Key to Trump's Re-Industrialization of the USA

Washington, May 11 – Raymond Greene, director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), emphasized the pivotal role of Taiwanese companies in achieving President Donald Trump's re-industrialization goals for the United States. Speaking at an investment summit, Greene highlighted the increasing importance of Taiwan's economic contribution to the US.

Greene's remarks were made at a reception for the Taiwan delegation at the U.S. Department of Commerce's 2025 SelectUSA Investment Summit, held in Maryland from Sunday to Wednesday.

In his welcome speech, Greene pointed out a significant shift in investment patterns. He noted that a decade ago, 80 percent of Taiwan's foreign investment flowed to the People's Republic of China. However, in 2024, a larger portion of Taiwan's foreign investment was directed towards the United States than any other country.

Drawing a parallel to Taiwan's crucial role in China's industrialization three decades ago, Greene stated, "We expect Taiwan companies to be just as critical to achieving President Trump's mission for re-industrializing the United States."

The AIT, as Greene mentioned, has been actively supporting the growing interest of Taiwanese companies in the American market, particularly in sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum technology.

He also noted that the Taiwan delegation at the 2025 SelectUSA summit was the largest among all participants.

Leading the Taiwan delegation were Cabinet Secretary-General Kung Ming-hsin (龔明鑫) and Economics Minister Kuo Jyh-huei (郭智輝), who also addressed the reception, urging the U.S. Congress to pass legislation to eliminate double taxation between Taiwan and the U.S.

The United States-Taiwan Expedited Double-Tax Relief Act, which was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives in January, is awaiting Senate approval and presidential signature to become law.

A statement from Taiwan's Cabinet revealed that the delegation to the 2025 SelectUSA Investment Summit included representatives from various industries such as ICT, semiconductors, AI, chemical engineering, biotechnology, smart manufacturing, aerospace, and financial services, underscoring the breadth of Taiwan's economic capabilities.
