Chen Nien-chin Clinches Bronze at World Boxing Cup: A Triumph for Taiwan

Taipei, April 4 – Taiwanese boxing star Chen Nien-chin (陳念琴), fresh from a bronze medal win in the women's 66-kilogram category at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has added another bronze to her collection. This time, she achieved a third-place finish in the welterweight (60-65kg) division at the 2025 World Boxing Cup held in Brazil on Friday.

Chen Nien-chin put up a strong fight, but ultimately lost to Kinga Krowka of Poland in the semifinal bout by a 4-1 split decision, ending her run at Foz do Iguaçu. While she won the opening round 29-28, the following four rounds were narrowly lost with identical 28-29 scores.

The event, officially titled "World Boxing Cup: Brazil 2025 - Foz do Iguaçu," held significant importance as the first major competition organized by World Boxing since its provisional recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in mid-March. World Boxing currently boasts 89 member countries as of March 27.

The World Boxing Cup also marked a key competition following the IOC's March 20 announcement confirming boxing's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

More than 130 boxers from 19 countries participated in the competition, vying for honors across 20 divisions – 10 for men and 10 for women. The competition ran from Tuesday to Saturday.

According to Chen Nien-chin's coach, Ko Wen-ming (柯文明), the 27-year-old boxer still has potential for growth in this lower weight class, especially as this is a recent adjustment. She was still competing in the under 70-kg division as recently as at the Strandja International Boxing Tournament in Bulgaria in late February and early March.

In a notable victory during the opening round of the World Boxing Cup, Chen Nien-chin defeated Brazil's two-time Olympian Beatriz Soares, who had previously earned silver in Tokyo and bronze in Paris, though she ultimately did not advance to the final.

Chen Nien-chin was one of four Taiwanese female boxers competing in Brazil, and she was the only one to reach the semifinals in her weight class.

Another Taiwanese boxer, Wu Shih-yi (吳詩儀), a bronze medalist in the 60kg division at the Paris Olympics, also participated in the 54-57 kg division but was eliminated before the semifinal round.
