Taiwan's Majestic Birds Face a Thrilling Chase: Yellow-throated Martens in Action

The Yellow-throated Marten, known for its omnivorous diet, is often observed hunting in packs, sometimes targeting larger prey like the Formosan Reeves' Muntjac, also known as "Mountain Goat." Conservation ranger He Changying recently witnessed a dramatic scene: a Yellow-throated Marten attempting to hunt a Mikado Pheasant. Although the hunt wasn't *successful*, the sighting was a first for He Changying in his 21 years of service, leaving him deeply amazed.

The Yushan National Park boasts a vibrant ecosystem. In addition to researchers documenting the first observation of wild Yellow-throated Martens mating in December of last year, conservation ranger He Changying recently captured footage of a Yellow-throated Marten attempting to hunt a Mikado Pheasant. He reported that in his 21 years of experience in the Yushan area, he frequently observed Yellow-throated Martens chasing Formosan Reeves' Muntjac. However, seeing them target the Mikado Pheasant was unprecedented. He was shocked and delighted to witness the hunt, understanding the difficulty involved.
