Former Mackay Memorial Hospital Physician Accused of Sexual Assault: Victim's Family Loses Lawsuit

The issue of sexual assault allegations in Taiwan continues to capture attention. This article focuses on a case involving a former physician at Mackay Memorial Hospital, identified as Wang, accused of sexual assault.

The alleged victim, a female student, recounted her experience on the online platform Dcard. The allegations include being sexually assaulted by Wang in a stairwell and being forced to perform oral sex. The victim later tragically took her own life, leaving a suicide note condemning Wang.

In the criminal trial, the first instance court sentenced Wang to six years in prison. However, this conviction was overturned in the second instance, resulting in an acquittal. The case is now undergoing further review.

In a related civil lawsuit, the victim's parents sought over NT$12.5 million in damages from Wang and Mackay Memorial Hospital. The Taipei District Court has ruled against the parents, dismissing the lawsuit and freeing Wang from financial liability. This decision is subject to appeal.

According to the prosecution, Wang, a radiology physician, initiated contact with the student online. On December 28, 2020, the student visited Mackay Memorial Hospital for a psychiatric consultation, and the two arranged to meet. Wang allegedly lured the student to the emergency exit staircase of the hospital's Gospel Building, where the assault took place, disregarding her protests.
