Taiwan Bolsters Healthcare with Massive NT$48.9 Billion Investment

Taipei, Taiwan - The Executive Yuan on Thursday unveiled an ambitious plan to revolutionize Taiwan's healthcare system, allocating NT$48.9 billion (approximately US$1.47 billion) over the next five years. This substantial investment aims to significantly enhance working conditions within medical facilities and address three crucial healthcare-related areas, solidifying Taiwan's position as a medical leader in the Asia-Pacific region.

The initiative, slated to run from this year through 2029, encompasses four key pillars. Alongside improved working conditions, the plan focuses on nurturing diverse talent within the healthcare sector, advancing smart medical services, and fostering social responsibility in healthcare practices.

Healthcare facilities and medical organizations, including various medical societies and associations, are invited to submit project proposals and apply for funding across these four vital domains.

Cabinet spokesperson Michelle Lee (李慧芝), quoting Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) during a press conference, emphasized the importance of meticulous review by the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) to ensure equitable distribution of the significant funding and prevent potential concentration among large entities. The Premier specifically stressed the principles of inclusiveness, fairness, and sustainability, ensuring support for medical professionals across various specializations and the proper allocation of resources.

Lee highlighted that building a "healthy Taiwan" is a core policy objective of President Lai Ching-te (賴清德). The government aims to use this plan to address existing limitations within the healthcare system, creating a more resilient and inclusive framework.

The overarching objective is to comprehensively elevate Taiwan's medical environment, ultimately promoting public well-being and overall health across the nation.
