Heavy Rains Batter Northern Taiwan, Six Areas Meet Criteria for Work/School Suspensions

Northern Taiwan, particularly areas north of Hsinchu, is experiencing heavy rainfall due to the influence of the northeastern monsoon and the outer circulation of Typhoon Haikui. The downpours are anticipated to continue until Wednesday.

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) initiated enhanced monitoring for large-scale or severe heavy rainfall events at noon today. The CWA is providing live updates to keep the public informed about the latest weather developments.

According to the CWA, both today and tomorrow, the northeastern monsoon and Typhoon Haikui will affect the northern and eastern parts of Taiwan, bringing heavy to torrential rain. Areas including Yilan, the Keelung North Coast, and the greater Taipei metropolitan area (New Taipei City, Taipei City) are likely to experience localized torrential downpours, with 24-hour rainfall potentially reaching 350 millimeters.

By Wednesday, as the typhoon moves away, a low-pressure trough will remain on its southern and southeastern sides. Hsinchu and areas north, Yilan, and Hualien will continue to see heavy to torrential rain, with Yilan expected to experience rainfall of torrential intensity or higher.

Heavy to torrential rains are ongoing in northern and eastern Taiwan today. Based on the CWA's latest wind and rain forecast released this afternoon at 1 PM, six administrative areas have met the criteria for work and school suspensions from 2 PM today to 2 PM tomorrow. Decisions regarding work and school suspensions will be announced by the respective local government authorities.
