Indonesia Targets Rice Self-Sufficiency Through Advanced Smart Farming Initiatives

Young farmers are key to modernizing agriculture and boosting national food security, according to the Ministry of National Development Planning.

The Ministry of National Development Planning in Indonesia is actively promoting the adoption of smart precision farming techniques among young farmers. This strategic push aims to accelerate the nation's journey towards rice self-sufficiency and bolster its overall food security.

Frans B.M. Dabukke, an expert staff member at the ministry, highlighted the critical role of young farmers in ensuring the continuity of agricultural practices, fostering innovation, and adapting the sector to rapid technological advancements. He expressed optimism that this initiative will create significant opportunities for the younger generation to lead and expand modern agricultural services.

During a recent grand harvest festival, Mr. Dabukke observed firsthand the application of advanced technologies, such as the use of drones for rice seed spreading. He suggested that this method should become a standard practice in modern farming, managed by the next generation of agricultural professionals.

The implementation of these modern approaches is anticipated to lead to a substantial increase in productivity. The current target for rice yields is set to rise from 10 tons per hectare to an ambitious 14 tons per hectare.

Furthermore, the ministry is committed to replicating and scaling up technology-driven agricultural communities. The objective is to encourage broader engagement from young farmers in the development of a sustainable agricultural future for Indonesia.
