Taiwan's First Green Building Features Bird-Safe Windows to Prevent Collisions

Innovative Design at Ruifang Animal Home Protects Avian Visitors with Specially Treated Glass

In a pioneering move for Taiwan, the Ruifang Animal Home in New Taipei City has been transformed into the nation's first green building to fully integrate measures against bird-window collisions. This initiative addresses a significant issue, as the New Taipei City Animal Protection Office reported 1,250 cases of bird rescues last year, with 9% attributed to window strikes. Among the affected species, the Taiwan Barbet was the most frequently rescued, accounting for 60 individuals.

To combat this problem, all 142 exterior glass windows of the Ruifang Animal Home have been fitted with specialized window films designed to prevent bird collisions. This project involved a collaborative effort between the Animal Protection Office, students and teachers from Ruifang Elementary School, the Taiwan Raptor Research Group, the Taipei Bird Society, and the New Taipei City Architects Association.

The final window film was applied in a ceremony involving these stakeholders. The designs incorporated on the films feature the imagery of local bird species, including the Taiwan Barbet, Crested Goshawk, and Oriental Turtle Dove. These artistic elements not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the building but also serve a crucial functional purpose, effectively reducing the risk of birds colliding with the glass and thereby safeguarding avian populations.
