Australian Hiker Rescued from Alishan Trail After Altitude Sickness Incident

Swift response by police and firefighters ensures the well-being of a young visitor experiencing altitude-related symptoms on Taiwan's scenic mountain paths.

A 25-year-old Australian hiker, identified as DAISY, experienced breathing difficulties and symptoms of altitude sickness while traversing the Tashan Trail in Alishan, Taiwan. Emergency services were promptly alerted and initiated a rescue operation.

Authorities reported that the Alishan United Police Station received a distress call around 1:30 PM on September 17th. The hiker reported experiencing dizziness, vomiting, and oxygen deprivation. Upon receiving the report, foreign affairs police officers assisted in pinpointing the hiker's location. The Alishan Fire Department was dispatched for medical assistance, and the Forestry Bureau's Alishan Maintenance Area was requested to provide a flatbed cart for transportation.

The rescue team reached the hiker, identified as MATHILDA, at approximately 2:42 PM. She appeared pale but was able to walk independently. Rescuers assessed her condition as a reaction to altitude sickness. She was then transported via the flatbed cart to a more accessible road and subsequently taken to a medical facility by ambulance. Fortunately, after medical examination, it was determined that the Australian visitor was not seriously harmed. She was then accompanied by her friends back to their hotel to rest.

On September 18th, before departing for Taipei via high-speed rail, MATHILDA and her group of six visited the Zhuqi Police Precinct to express their gratitude to the police and firefighters for their swift and efficient rescue. The precinct chief presented the group with apples, wishing them a safe journey in Taiwan, and gifted them local Alishan coffee and high-mountain tea as souvenirs, which they found delightful and a testament to Taiwan's warm hospitality.

The Zhuqi Police Chief emphasized that serving the public is a core duty of the police force. He commended the officers and firefighters for fulfilling their responsibilities in the mountain rescue, noting it also served as an act of goodwill diplomacy. He took the opportunity to remind visitors that trails in the Alishan region are situated at altitudes exceeding 2,000 meters, making altitude sickness a potential concern. Hikers are advised to monitor their health, be aware of weather changes, travel in groups, and carry essential communication and rescue equipment to mitigate risks during their mountain activities.
