Cement Plant Dust Eruption Blankets Streets and Cars in White Powder

A significant dust eruption occurred at the Universal Cement Wuri plant, leaving surrounding streets, trees, and at least 50 parked vehicles coated in a thick layer of white powder. The incident, which happened on the afternoon of the 11th, was caused by a rupture in the plant's dust collection system.

Local community leaders voiced strong dissatisfaction, noting that this is the third such occurrence in just over two years. They highlighted a lack of effective improvement measures from the plant and expressed frustration over the absence of proactive communication following the event. Residents reported feeling helpless, with many keeping their windows shut and expressing concerns about the persistent pollution and its impact on their health, especially for families with children.

The dust, while not toxic, is described as having strong adhesion, making it difficult to remove from surfaces. Community members emphasized that their primary concern is not compensation for cleaning costs or property repairs, but rather the cessation of these recurring pollution events.

Environmental authorities stated that the company has experienced similar incidents in April 2023 and December 2023. Following this latest event, the company faces potential fines ranging from NT$450,000 to NT$5,000,000 for the severe pollution of surrounding vehicles and roads.
