Illegal Dumping Ravages Kaohsiung Mountainside, Echoing Past Environmental Scars

Following a similar incident at the Heshan Solar Farm, the mountainous region of Dashu District in Kaohsiung is once again witnessing the alarming sight of denuded hillsides. The area near the interchange of National Freeway No. 3, between Cishan and Dashu, sees a constant stream of heavy trucks, with some days recording up to 200 vehicle movements. These trucks, often covered with black netting, obscure the nature of their cargo. The site is reportedly monitored by surveillance cameras and individuals described as "lookouts," suggesting an attempt to evade detection.

Local residents, utilizing satellite imagery, have observed a stark contrast between the lush green slopes and a conspicuous patch of bare, yellow earth. They suspect that trees have been felled and the land excavated, only to be refilled with industrial waste. Despite reporting these concerns to relevant authorities, residents express frustration over a perceived lack of effective action.

The Kaohsiung City Government has stated that this is an ongoing case. The Water Resources Bureau has the site under its purview and has already imposed a fine of NT$200,000. Furthermore, in June of this year, the Qiao Tou District Prosecutors Office, in conjunction with the Environmental Protection Bureau, initiated an investigation. The government assures that any illegal activities will be thoroughly investigated and dealt with severely.
