Taitung Enhances International Tourism with New Charter Flights to Malaysia
Direct air links aim to boost travel between Taiwan and Southeast Asia.
Taitung County is set to launch direct charter flight services connecting to Malaysia in the final months of 2025, coinciding with the New Year holiday period. This initiative, announced by the Taitung County government, marks an expansion of the county's efforts to attract international visitors.
The new charter flights will be operated by Batik Air Malaysia and are integrated into five-day tour packages designed for travelers visiting either Taitung County or Malaysia. These packages aim to provide a seamless travel experience for tourists.
The inaugural charter flight, with a capacity of approximately 200 passengers, is scheduled to bring Malaysian tourists to Taitung on December 30th. On the same day, the flight will depart from Taitung at 12:35 p.m., carrying Taiwanese tourists back to Kuala Lumpur.
A subsequent charter flight is planned for January 3rd, 2026, bringing Taiwanese travelers home. This flight is expected to arrive in Taitung at 5:30 p.m. before returning Malaysian visitors to Kuala Lumpur later that evening.
Taitung County Magistrate Yao Ching-ling emphasized the importance of these services in enhancing tourism visibility for both regions. She noted that extensive discussions with Malaysian travel agencies were crucial in planning these charter flights.
Magistrate Yao highlighted that these direct flights are expected to significantly reduce travel times for tourists, offering a more convenient transportation option between Taitung and Malaysia.
The development of these services involved a delegation led by Hung Kuo-chin, deputy head of Taitung's Transportation and Tourism Development Department. In June, Hung visited Malaysia to engage with tourism representatives and present the charter flight proposal.
During this visit, a memorandum of understanding was signed with Patrick Law, National President of the Malaysian Chinese Tourism Association. This agreement establishes a framework for the charter flights and lays the groundwork for a long-term cooperative relationship.
These new services to Malaysia are part of a broader strategy by Taitung County to foster international exchanges and introduce overseas visitors to the county's natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.
The Malaysia route follows previous charter flight arrangements from Taitung to other Southeast Asian destinations, including Thailand and Vietnam, earlier in the year. These efforts underscore Taitung's commitment to diversifying its international tourism appeal.
Further expanding its international connectivity, Taitung has also arranged a round-trip charter flight to Ho Chi Minh City on August 30th. Additionally, a similar service connecting Taitung and Chiang Mai is scheduled for October.
