Giant Flying Squirrel Rescued After Storm in Taiwan

A vulnerable giant flying squirrel, disoriented by recent typhoons, receives expert care and rehabilitation.

Following recent typhoon activity that disrupted the natural habitats and foraging patterns of wildlife, a concerned citizen reported finding a large, reddish-brown creature resembling a squirrel in a drainage ditch along Qingshan Road in Sanzhi District. The animal, characterized by its distinctive concave, curved incisors and clawed limbs, was found soaked and listless, exhibiting signs of severe weakness and in urgent need of assistance.

Upon receiving the report, the New Taipei City Animal Protection Office dispatched an animal rescuer to the scene. The creature was identified as a giant flying squirrel (Petaurista petaurista). It was promptly transported to the Sanzhi Animal Home for immediate care. A veterinary examination revealed superficial abrasions on the squirrel's head and extreme hunger due to prolonged lack of food, which had rendered it too weak to move independently.

The veterinary team cleaned and disinfected the wounds, provided fresh water and nutritious food, and will now focus on a period of rest and recovery. Once the giant flying squirrel has fully regained its strength, it is scheduled to be released back into its natural habitat.
