Pungent Plastic Odor Blankets Hsinchu County's Zhubei City, Authorities Investigate Potential Leak

A strong, acrid odor reminiscent of burning plastic permeated the eastern district of Zhubei City, Hsinchu County, on the evening of the 26th. Numerous residents reported the pungent smell to the Environmental Protection Bureau. Following these reports, the bureau dispatched personnel to investigate the source of the odor. Initial assessments have ruled out open burning as the cause, with suspicions now leaning towards a leak of odorous substances. The investigation to pinpoint the pollution source is ongoing.

According to reports, the Environmental Protection Bureau has conducted patrols along various sections of Guangming 6th Road, Zhuangjing North and South Roads, Jiafeng North and South Roads, the area surrounding the High-Speed Rail station, Dongxing Road sections, and Shixing Road, but has yet to locate the origin of the pollution. However, analysis of sensor data has preliminarily excluded characteristics of open burning, suggesting a leak of odorous materials. Efforts to clarify the situation are continuing.

The Environmental Protection Bureau advises residents to close windows and doors, ensuring minimal necessary ventilation. Wearing masks when outdoors is also recommended. Zhubei City Representative Peng Jun-zhi further advised residents to limit outdoor activities, especially for children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory sensitivities. He also suggested activating indoor air purifiers and maintaining sealed indoor ventilation to prevent the ingress of outside air.
