Chiayi County Distributes Protective Gear Amidst Typhoon Debris Cleanup

Following the impact of Typhoon Danas, authorities in Chiayi County, Taiwan, are taking proactive measures to address potential health risks associated with asbestos. The county government announced on Tuesday that they are providing free asbestos protection kits to residents in nine affected cities and townships.

The concern stems from damage to coastal roof tiles, which may contain asbestos. Asbestos is recognized as a Group 1 carcinogen, and inhaling airborne fibers can lead to serious respiratory issues, including lung scarring and breathing difficulties. During the 1980s, asbestos was commonly utilized in Taiwan for its fireproof and heat-resistant qualities, making it a frequent component in roofing materials, particularly for factories constructed during that era.

Residents involved in cleaning up typhoon debris are strongly encouraged to reach out to local sanitation teams to obtain a complimentary protection kit. Each kit contains essential items such as three N95 masks, goggles, and protective gloves. To minimize exposure, individuals are advised to follow safety protocols, including wetting down tiles before handling to suppress dust and avoiding any actions that could release asbestos fibers into the air.

The Chiayi County Government has emphasized the critical importance of exercising extreme caution, especially when dealing with broken asbestos tiles. Even small amounts of inhaled asbestos dust can pose significant health hazards.
