Massive 15-Meter Crack Appears at Taiwan Scenic Platform After Heavy Rains

Following heavy rainfall attributed to a low-pressure system and southwest winds, a significant 15-meter crack has emerged at the Chihkan Ding viewing platform in Taiping District, Taichung, Taiwan. The extensive fissure, measuring between 3 to 5 centimeters in width, has raised concerns about the structural stability of the popular tourist spot.

Local council member Cai Yao-chieh, who was surveying the area for disaster assessment, discovered the alarming crack. It is believed that the combination of recent heavy rains and prior seismic activity may have caused the ground beneath the platform to erode, leading to its displacement and the formation of the large crack. The gap is reportedly wide enough to fit a beverage cup.

The Chihkan Ding viewing platform is a well-known attraction offering panoramic views and is a popular route for motorcycle and cycling enthusiasts. Previous incidents of heavy rainfall have caused damage to retaining walls and slopes in the vicinity, resulting in the platform and adjacent roads becoming misaligned and sinking. The reappearance and increased size of the crack have prompted immediate safety measures.

Council member Cai Yao-chieh has alerted the city government, and authorities have cordoned off the area to prevent public access, fearing a potential collapse into the valley below. He emphasized the danger to unsuspecting visitors who might stand on the compromised section of the platform.

In addition to the damage at the viewing platform, Cai Yao-chieh also reported encountering significant mudflows and localized flooding on Changlong Road Section 3 in Taiping. The road conditions made passage difficult for vehicles, and he advised the public to avoid the area.

The weather forecast indicates a continued risk of short-duration, intense rainfall in several areas of Taiwan, including Hsinchu County and City, Miaoli County, Taichung City, Changhua County, Chiayi County, and mountainous regions of Pingtung County. Residents are urged to be aware of potential lightning strikes, strong gusts of wind, landslides, falling rocks, debris flows, and rising river levels. Low-lying areas are particularly susceptible to flooding.
