Taiwan Hit by Severe Thunderstorms, Causing Power Outages and Explosions

Changhua County in Taiwan experienced intense thunderstorms on the 8th, with reports of lightning striking power poles and causing explosions. Eyewitnesses described seeing multiple lightning strikes hitting a utility pole along the road from Erlin Township to Beidou, resulting in a massive fireball. The severe weather has led to power outages in various parts of the county, with coastal townships being particularly affected.

One witness recounted the terrifying experience, stating, "With a loud 'boom,' the entire sky exploded into a ball of fire!" while driving towards Beidou from Erlin Township. They observed lightning repeatedly striking what appeared to be a utility pole, causing it to explode and ignite, creating a frightening spectacle.

Taiwan Power Company's Changhua branch confirmed that the thunderstorms caused multiple feeder lines to trip. The outages are concentrated in coastal townships such as Fangyuan, Fuxing, Xianxi, and Shengang, with some areas in Xihu and Hemei also impacted. While some areas have had power restored through interconnections, approximately 4,478 households remain without electricity. Taiwan Power Company has dispatched additional personnel to expedite repairs and is asking for the public's patience.
